John I. Sandson, dean of Boston University's School ofMedicine, will retire after 13 years.
Sandson helped establish programs such as the School of PublicHealth, which enables working students to obtain a master's inpublic health without interrupting their careers. Another was theearly medical selection program, which the school works with ninetraditionally black colleges to increase minority enrollment in theBU School of Medicine.
Sandson attended St. Vincent College, Latrobe, Pa., and laterreceived a doctor of medicine at Washington University in St. Louis.
Thomas O'Brien has been appointed dean of UMass-Amherstschool of management. O'Brien, former White House fellow in the USDepartment of Housing and Urban Development, received a bachelor'sdegree in economics from Tufts University and a master's degree anddoctorate in economics from Cornell University.
Joseph P. Mercurio has been named to the Newbury College boardof trustees. Mercurio, senior vice-president at Boston Universityreceived a bachelor's in applied science in businessadministration from Boston University.

Jelle Atema, professor in the Boston University Marine Program,has received a Guggenheim Fellowship from the John Simon GuggenheimMemorial Foundation in New York.
Atema will use the fellowship to write a book based on hisresearch on the sense organs of animals and how they discriminateamong stimuli in the environment.
